Pro-Palestinian Activists Defy Limits Before Israeli President’s Australia Trip
President Herzog is due to arrive in Sydney on Monday, the same day the Palestine Action Group intends to stage a demonstration at Town Hall, as reported by a news agency.
In preparation for the visit, the New South Wales (NSW) administration has expanded law-enforcement authority, while Premier Chris Minns has again appealed for restraint and public order.
Protest coordinators stated that they plan to march from Town Hall to Macquarie Street, even though the proposed path lies within a designated restricted area. In response, the state government has encouraged organizers to select an alternative venue.
Additional demonstrations are scheduled to take place in 24 cities nationwide on Feb. 9, including Canberra, Sydney, Perth, and Melbourne, all aimed at opposing Herzog’s visit.
The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN), a nationwide alliance advocating for Palestinian human rights, declared that the Israeli president should not receive a welcome and must be held "accountable."
"Isaac Herzog is not a ceremonial guest. He is the head of state of a government carrying out genocide in Gaza, enforcing occupation, and maintaining apartheid over Palestinians. His rhetoric was cited by the International Court of Justice in assessing the risk of genocide," APAN said on the US social media platform X.
